IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4), before the development of IPv6 also simply IP, is the fourth version of the Internet Protocol (IP). It was the first version of the Internet Protocol to be distributed and used worldwide, and is an important technical foundation of the Internet. It was defined in RFC 791 in 1981.
